# 1 The Black Lips – arabia mountain (vice records)

Een band die met hun zesde lp onze plaat van het jaar scoort. Dat is bijzonder. In allerlei opzichten. Wij zijn doorgaans nogal van de debuutplaten al was het alleen al omdat weinig bands de boog zo lang gespannen weten te houden. En weinig bands komen na een tweetal iets minder geïnspireerde platen terug met misschien wel de beste plaat uit hun carriere, zoals the Black Lips hier voor elkaar hebben gekregen. En weinig bands doen dat door zowel hetzelfde te blijven als te veranderen. Het is precies die instelling die The Black Lips tot een van de meest bijzondere bands van het eerste decennium van deze eeuw maakt. In principe een ordinaire garageband, een stel vrienden dat vooral veel plezier wil hebben. Maar onder die oppervlakte schuilt een heel bijzonder stel. Niet te beroerd om wat dan ook te proberen en zo heel voorzichtig de grenzen wat op te rekken van die typische Black Lips sound. Zo ook hun verzoek aan succesvolle producer Mark Ronson, van oa Amy Winehouse haar succesplaat Back To Black, om de Black Lips sound eens onder handen te nemen. Het levert een ongemeen succes op. Met louter hits, ondanks de professionele sound waarin die hits deze keer gegoten zijn. Het deert niet. Alles klinkt nog steeds als The Black Lips. Minder rauw dan op hun garagemeesterwerk Let It Bloom maar even effectief. Een plaat vol aanstekelijke garagepop waarop eigenlijk geen slecht nummer te vinden valt.
Om al deze redenen staat Arabia Mountain van The Black Lips dit jaar op één in onze jaarlijst.

#2 The People’s Temple – Sons Of Stone (Hozac records)

Of hoe vier jonge gastjes uit Lansing, Michigan het wiel opnieuw proberen uit te vinden en daar wonderwel in slagen. Het debuut van de naar de Jim Jones cult vernoemde band op het label van het jaar, Hozac, staat bomvol geweldige sixties garage songs met een sound die het midden houdt tussen 13th Floor Elevators, vroege Stones, Love en een iets meer gefocuste Black Lips. 14 psychedelische garagerocksongs uit eigen koker die even precies laten horen hoe een door de 1966 sound geinspireerde plaat anno 2011 dient te klinken. The People’s Temple slaat daardoor een gapend gat met de concurrentie in de neo-garagescene die al snel een beetje saai klinkt naast de wilde sounds van Sons Of Stone. Fijne zanger, goeie songs en bakken fuzz en feedback en geen moment gezapig.
